How To Make The Most Out Of Your Next Company Convention by David Ledoux
My hands hurt from clapping and my voice was raspy and sore from yelling and screaming. Adrenaline shot through my body like hillbilly moonshine. I had been crying and laughing and cheering off and on for over an hour.
No, I wasn't at an AC/DC concert. It was 1988. I was at my first ever network marketing convention. More than 6000 people were packed into a convention center and I had never seen or experienced anything like it in my life.
Have you had a similar experience? Here we are in the magical age of the internet, and yet nothing, and I mean NOTHING can replace the intense emotions generated at a major company function.
In his landmark work, "Personal Coaching For Results" author Lou Tice wrote about the 4 modalities of belief system modification. All 4 methods of change are activated at a large convention. Perhaps that is why all of the truly great network marketing companies get their troops together at least once a year. They know the inherent transformational power of the group dynamic.
Here are 5 Key Ideas to make your next convention experience truly magical.
1. Documentation beats conversation.
Invest in a digital camera, and extra batteries and flash memory. Fill that baby with hundreds of photos. Get group shots, shots with leaders, shots with celebrities, speakers, management, upline, everyone! With online storage so cheap (or free!) you can create online photo albums that PROVE that you and your team are having fun! Use the link in sig files, email newsletters and on websites.
2. Storm The Stage
At the end of the conference, drag your entire downline onto the stage before they tear it down. Get photos of all your gang at the podium. Dream build and give them the view of what it feels like to be up there in front of hundreds or thousands or tens of thousands of seats. Let their DNA soak up the experience so their subconscious brain can work on the memories. Email them the photos, and constantly reinforce the desired behavior. "Remember how great it felt to be up there? Next convention let's make sure we get you up there for real accepting your award!"
3. Promote The Next Event
Make sure you have a calendar, day timer, Palm Pilot etc with you at all times. Every time you run into your downline, pull out the calendar and start booking 3-way calls, conference calls, team events, home meetings etc with them. Everyone will leave the conference excited. It's up to you to fill the next 2-3 weeks with appointments so your team converts that excitement into momentum.
4. Share The Excitement
I always schedule a Post-Event Team Conference Call the day or so after so everyone in the organization who missed the convention can catch the fever. Get testimonials, hand outs, and incorporate a battle plan moving forward so everyone hits the ground running. The 30 days immediately following a major function are extremely valuable if you get everyone into action.
5. Tap The Top 50
I send 50 postcards from the event to my Top 50 prospects. Use a postcard from the host city if possible. Here's what I wrote on my last batch.
"Dear Frank, Greetings from Houston! I just learned 3 new ways to make an extra $5000 a month. Do you want to know a secret? Call me as soon as you get this! - David"
I got 12 calls from the 50.... isn't networking great? :)
Remember, he or she who has the most people at a major function wins.... the power of a convention to magically transform not just your belief systems, but the belief systems of your entire organization is a major secret of the heavy hitters.

Of course you answered ,'Absolutely!'. Me too!
One of the ways to re-ignite the 'burn' is by hosting a live training event for your team. Human interaction and the group dynamic have been part of network marketing since the 1940's. In today's fast-paced, internet lifestyle it is even more vital to the success of your organization.
The quality, not the quantity, of your team-building events will be the most important factor. Here are a few ideas that I have been using with great success for more than a decade in MLM....
1. WHAT DO YOU CALL THE EVENT?
Be consistent in labeling the event. Think long term, big picture. By giving the event an actual title, communicating the excitement and necessity to attend will be easier. Strategize with your team as to how this event fits into your overall plan. Some examples of local and regional training events that I have organized include:

2. HAVE A FLYER FOR THE EVENT
Have a 1-page flyer for your organization that they can mail, fax and email their team. Remember to include the date, start and finish times, the location with directions, what to bring, who's qualified to attend, the investment, the speakers and training topics. Get the flyer out to the team at least 28 days before the event.
3. SHOW THE PLAN, SHOW THE PLAN, SHOW THE PLAN
Our most successful training events were always on a Saturday morning. We would show the plan from 10 am to 11 am, then do a 1 hour training. Guests were invited to stay after the Business Briefing to check out our training systems. The sponsoring rate was always significantly higher on those days. I believe that if you can get a guest out of bed on a Saturday morning and to see the BIG PICTURE, you have a serious business partner! These events are best used as a second or third look by a qualified prospect.
4. 10-20-30 YOUR TRAINING
The fastest way to learn your MLM business is to attempt to explain it to your new downline. How can you fill an hour with quality information, especially if you're fairly new yourself? Break the hour into manageable pieces. After your Business Briefing, take a 15 minute break (eg. 10 - 10:45 am, then start the training at 11:00)
When you come back, do 10 minutes of CALENDARING. Train the new people to utilize their dayplanner/calendar system. Review the month ahead. As a team schedule all conference calls, Open Business Briefings, trainings, and live events. The whole MLM game is a business of TIME DUPLICATION. This is where you solidify it in the group.
Spend 20 minutes on RECOGNITION. You can create a high performance team by recognizing the desired behaviors of your organization. If you focus on the work, the results will come. We have a benchmark of doing 15 personal presentations in a month. If someone does that for 3-4 months, no matter who they are, they will get results. We recognize people for showing 15 plans, for first checks, for first home meetings, for attending events, for supporting their teams, etc. If you want to build a huge downline, you must master the art of sharing of recognition with your team.
Use the final 30 minutes to train on the BASICS. Keep it simple. Emphasize the steps that they should be doing every day. Focus on plugging into the training systems for your group. Tapes, books, events, etc. Focus on activity. Focus on setting appointments, showing the plan and following up. By emphasizing the work, the results will follow.
5. THE MEETING AFTER THE MEETING
After every training event I always catch a meal or a coffee with an up and coming leader in my group and their downline. This is your chance to bond, create rapport, dream build and to strengthen the relationships with the key people who will build your residual income.
Encourage your leaders to meet with their up and comers as well. As this group dynamic duplicates, you team will literally take over entire restaurants, each table a micro-nucleus of excited future superstars in your organization.
By planning your events properly, and by emphasizing these 5 key points, your live training events will be a monster success! You will get your people excited, on track, and moving faster towards their goals. Don't wait for someone to train your downline. Take hold of leadership, and ignite the BURN for your organization!

Ten Things You Can Do RIGHT NOW To EXPLODE Your Network Marketing Business! by David Ledoux
I wrote an article for you today that you may find exciting. In fact, you may want to print this doozy out or forward it to a couple leaders on your team. It's entitled:
Ten Things You Can Do RIGHT NOW To EXPLODE Your Network Marketing Business!
Sluggish? Need a boost? Want to throw gasoline on your MLM fire?
Massive Action Equals Massive Results!
Here's a 10-step Massive Action Campaign that will shock your business like taking a dip in a lake in December!
1. Take 10 pieces of blank paper and tape them on the wall of your office. You are going to make 10 prospecting calls a day for 10 days in a row. You will write down each call each day on 1 sheet of paper. What are you going to do with each prospect? Are you going to give them a video, audio, website, fax, or a 1 on 1 presentation? Make a plan and stick to it. Who do you call? Anyone who isn't in your downline yet... You MUST have a Master List!
2. Get 10 downline members on your team to do the exact same thing. Have them commit to calling 10 prospects a day each for 10 straight days. Be available to do 3-way calls with their hottest prospects. You and your team will make 1100 prospect calls in a week and a half!
3. Call or email at least 10 members of your upline and tell them what your team is doing. You are looking for upline leadership to be available for 3-way calls and/or conference calls for your team's most excited prospects.
4. Promote the NEXT EVENT to every prospect that you and your team call. Is it a big training conference call with your upline, a special hotel event, or an in-home training at your place? If there is no next event, YOU MUST CREATE ONE! Tell 1100 people about it in the next 10 days with your team's help. Invite all 1100 people to be there!
5. You and your entire team mail 'Thank You!' notes to every single prospect you talk to during the blitz. Brainstorm how to write these. Make them curiosity pieces. For example,' Dear Joe, great speaking with you last week. Did I mention my amazing new website? Check it out at www....com! - David'. It's like planting 1100 seeds. Which ones will grow into trees that bear fruit? Only time will tell.
6. After the blitz is over, do a group conference call with your 10 warriors. Go through each person's list to see who has prospects still in the 'pipeline' as a MAYBE. Plan aggressive follow-ups with the MAYBE's in the form of 3-ways calls, upline 3-ways, and get them more information to become either a YES or a LATER.
7. Make a list of every new distributor who joined your team during the blitz. Send them a personal 'Welcome-To-The-Team' letter and introduce yourself and promote the next special event to them.
8. Call each person in your downline who sponsored someone during the blitz. Congratulate them for a job well done, and make sure their new distributor gets started properly with a solid Getting Started Training.
9. Write up a short 100-word article about what your team did and talk about the most positive aspects of the results. Send a copy to your 10 upline leaders, and a copy to your parent MLM company. See if their Publications Department will do a write-up of your team for the next company magazine!
10. Do it the entire blitz again with a new group of 10 people in about 60 days. Get your downline leaders to do a blitz the exact same way at the exact same time. You will have thousands of prospects contacted and massive growth in your business!
You can do this! Block out all distractions for just 2 weeks and take Massive Action. This blitz may attract the leader that earns you a residual income for the rest of your life.
Short term pain for long term gain....

I have a bit of bad news today. by David Ledoux
The Mr. Submarine shop at the corner of 24 and 7 in Guelph, Ontario, Canada closed this week.
Why should you care? Because I missed out on an opportunity. Perhaps you can learn from my mistake....
I used to eat at that place at least 2-3 times a month for 4 years. I figure that's over 100 meals there. It was on my 'route' between Guelph, Waterloo and London. Back then, I was running the roads, driving the miles and drawing the circles building my network marketing business. At one point I was doing three hotel meetings a week along that lonely stretch of highway. I wanted to be a success in mlm so bad...
I got to be friendly with the owner. She was a nice lady, European I think. Maybe Portuguese or Italian. I never bothered to get her name, but she would always say hi when I stopped in, and I would always say hi back.
I figured I spent about a grand in her sandwich shop. 100 meals, everyone of them identical. A pizza sub, bag of Doritos and a large black coffee for the road.
I gave her a thousand bucks, and never once talked to her about business.
She probably paid over a $100,000 for her sub shop. And quietly, without any media coverage or fan fair, one day she went bankrupt. She poured 90 hours a week for how many years, only to lose everything?
I'll never forget the day I pulled into the parking lot. It was empty. My brain didn't register. The lights were out. It still didn't register. The place was empty. I thought, 'Wait a minute...something's different.'
It was only when I read the Letter of Eviction on the door did it finally sink in. I stood there, the January snow softly falling, numb with disbelief.
For four years, over 100 times, I could have shown her a better way. She watched me come in first in jeans, then slacks, then $1500 suits over the years. Driving first a rusty old van, then a VW Passat, then a Jaguar, then a new Mercedes.
She would smile sometimes, and say, 'You look nice tonight. Business good, yes?' and I would always nod and grin.
Why didn't I show her my business? She could have made enough to stave off bankruptcy, or even sell the shop and stay at home. No more 90 hours a week on her feet. 15 hours a week, for 3 or 4 years, and she'd have a beautiful residual income.
When I realized my selfishness, the feeling of guilt was nearly overwhelming. I know you and I can't save the world. But don't we have an obligation to at least show good people that there is 'a better way'?
I wish I had just opened my mouth. Even the pain of hearing the word "NO" can't compare with the guilt of never saying a word.
I would spare you the same...

You Can't Swim Without Getting Wet in MLM by David Ledoux
I've had an epiphany over the last few days that I wanted to share with you in regards to being a "phone-monster" in network marketing. It's hard to type this because my cat keeps sitting on the keyboard. She is demanding attention.
If you look around the industry right now, do you see a whole bunch of people trying to build downlines by buying leads, cold calling them using a script, and dialing hundreds of dials a week?
Have you tried this personally? What have you discovered?
I have a friend named "Phil" who has a pretty nice downline of over a thousand people. The other day one of his team named Howard was out of town on business, and asked Phil to call his leads for him. I was baffled as to why Phil would do this for Howard.
"David, Howard gets 5 leads a day on auto ship. His leads are 5 bucks apiece. We don't want them to go to waste!"
Phil called me a few days later with a discovery. "David, those 5 dollar leads from that vendor are just as crappy as my 5 cent leads...I am so fed up of talking to broke halfwits!"
I asked him what his plan was. I was surprised by the answer.
"We're going back to building local downlines using warm market and driving depth through home meetings. That's how I put over 500 people into my business my first 18 months!"
Can I get an "Amen!" brothers and sisters?
Here's the BIG secret...and I am going to make a few enemies and a few extra critics with this statement... the ONLY way to truly build a real mlm business that pays you for decades is by building a strong local base through 1 on 1's, 2 on 1's coffee shops, kitchen tables and living rooms.
Anyone that tells you differently is selling something. Maybe they are selling leads. Or websites. Or dead genealogies. Or conference call bridges. Or tape mail outs. Or power legs. They may mean well. Or they may be in it for a buck.
The business hasn't changed in 60 years. A lot of experts who aren't in the trenches building will tell you it has. But at the end of the pen, it's still the same.
It starts with a dream. Then a list. Then you show the plan. Over and over and over again. And then there is everything else.
1. Dream 2. List 3. Plans 4. Everything else
It looks like such a simple business. Maybe that's a clue. Maybe only simple things duplicate?

Is it Urgent or Important? by David Ledoux
When it comes to building big downlines, one of the most common excuses I hear from people is "I don't have the time!"
When I sit down to coach them, I find a shocking statistic....they have the exact same 168 hours in the week that top earners have!
One of the secrets to productivity is scheduling your time, and then protecting it fanatically. In scheduling that time, please, please, please differentiate between URGENT and IMPORTANT tasks.
For example, right now take a deep breath and hold it. In about a minute or so, it will become important to exhale and take another breath...but keep holding your breath. Hold it....hold it....hold it...how are you doing so far?
After about a minute and a half, not only will it be important to breathe again, it will become urgent. You can tell the difference by stress levels in your body....feel the burn in your lungs yet?
Keep holding your breath until the end of this article.
When it comes to making calls to prospects, its almost always important, but not urgent. Urgent tasks stress our immune systems, and give us anxiety. Important tasks make us feel accomplished when they are done. Most people who cry, "I don't have any time" are being bogged down by the urgent, instead of living in the important.
Is it important or urgent to tell your spouse and kids that you love them?
How are your lungs? Is it urgent or important to breathe again?
I appreciate you...live in the important, not the urgent!

When Life Gets In The Way Of Building Downlines by David Ledoux
I recognized the familiar voice when I checked my messages. It was "Frankie", one of my newer downlink members. He had come flying out of the gate his first month and sponsored 2 or 3 members. All cold market long-distance. He'd call me daily to do 3-way calls to close his prospects that he got off of lead lists that he had bought. He was very unteachable, but had potential.
Within 60 days the daily calls had dropped to weekly, then sporadic. He would refuse to send me his weekly tracking sheets so I never had any clue as to his work levels, percentages or results. Within 90 days the only words out of his mouth were complaints about how hard the business was, how expensive the products were, how his ex-wife kept hassling him, and how his boss at his crummy job was bringing him down.
Sound familiar? These are WARNING SIGNS.
Within another month he had been evicted from his rented apartment, lost his job, and quit his MLM business. And then he called me for help...
What am I, a freakin' miracle worker? :)
When I first got started in the business, I would have spent a ton of time trying to "fix" Frankie. Trying to play shrink gave me a bad case of MLM burnout in the late nineties. AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS!
Questions to ponder:
1. Who has your phone number that shouldn't?
2. How accessible are you via email, phone, pager, cell, IM, etc?
3. What accountability do you require before someone gets a chunk of your time?
4. What dollar value do you assign an hour of your life?
5. What 3 things will you change TODAY to get some of your time back?
